A good night’s sleep is critical for a child’s growing body and brain. A rested child learns better, remembers more and is more focused at school. Although recommendations vary with age, here are some healthy sleep tips for growing children:
- Maintain a consistent sleep schedule – Your child’s bed time and wake up time should be about the same every day of the week.
- Toddlers get between 12-14 hours, while preschoolers and school-aged children get 10-12 hours.
- Avoid caffeinated products in the late afternoon/evening.
- Plan up to 1 hour of quiet time before bed – Allow your child to set aside up to 1 hour for calm, enjoyable activities, such as listening to quiet music or reading a book.
